90 years to the day Finland claimed its independence after centuries of Swedish control and another ten decades under the Russian regime. The flame that erupted in the Russian Empire set the stage for the declaration of independence. 90 years to the day the flag was raised at senate square - the message was clear, the Republic of Finland had been formed. Strife, toil, civil war and poverty were the obstacles that beset the newly formed nation on all sides and yet we prevailed. Twice did we ward off a mighty foreign intruder - twice we paid massive reparations and several times did our fathers spill their blood for their homeland. And yet we prevailed - and not only did we prevail; the hard working and deeply-committed people raised this country to its knees. We faced rations, poverty and fear of war and yet we became one of the leading welfare nations in the world. I am most proud to be born to such a noble land, proud am I that my fathers formed such a formidable nation, pround I am of my lineage and greatful for those who did not even see the results of their work. Rarely has a land been home to men like Ryti or Mannerheim - names that should not be taken lightly or without appropriate respect. Even the foreigner will know of Finland - be it through its history, its culture, spirit or contribution to world affairs.
Thus I want to thank the noble people of the last hundred years and show my greatest and most sincere gratitude for those who allowed us to raise the blue and white flag for the ninetieh year - Pro Patria Finlandia! I want express my gratitude for all I have been offered and towards the beauty of my homeland - truly, in my opinion, is anything as precious as the blue and white maiden; the lakes, forests and its people! May it last in peace and retain its glory! Vivat Finlandia - Dum spiramus tuebimur!
